Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Live-Action Remake of ALADDIN For Disney

Ever since Disney started successfully remaking their animated classics in live-action, I've been waiting for them to announce a remake of Aladdin. Robin Williams' death may have been the reason for the delay (that's pure speculation on my part), but now the studio has pulled the trigger on the movie and execs are having discussions with director Guy Ritchie about helming it. Additionally, Deadline says the studio is eyeing this as a potential franchise starter, so assuming this movie makes enough money, we're going to get more adventures with these characters (no surprise there, considering The Jungle Book 2 is in the works).

Frankly, I should have seen this coming. In hindsight, Ritchie is an obvious choice to direct this film because of Aladdin's street rat origins: he's built a career making movies about the down-and-dirty street rats of London, and he's even bringing that vibe to King Arthur early next year. Whether or not he can handle what's sure to be some difficult casting, or bringing the family-friendly tone of the original to life with physical actors and CGI remains to be seen.
