In Today's "No Duh" News, STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Will Not Have a Sequel Because It Already Exists

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first standalone film that will be released by Lucasfilm, and it looks like it's going to deliver something special. The movie is set before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope and follows a group of Rebels who embark on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star from the Empire. The basic plot of the story is laid out in the opening crawl of A New Hope

Because of this, it was fairly obvious that there wouldn't be a sequel because A New Hope is basically the sequel that already exists. Just in case you were wondering if there would be a sequel, though, the answer is no. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed it in the most recent issue of Empire Magazine. So don't expect to see a "Rogue Two."

The idea for Rogue One came from VFX artist John Knollstates, and he always intended for it to be self-contained movie. Director Gareth Edwards even offered his opinion on a sequel jokingly saying, “That sequel will be directed by George Lucas,” which is obviously a reference to A New Hope.

I think one of the cool aspects about this Star Wars Story films is the fact that every standalone film doesn't need to be a trilogy or saga. They can just tell a single story and move on with something completely different that is set in the same universe.
