James Cameron Gives AVATAR 2 Update and Confirms Release and Shooting Dates

After all these years of knowing that an Avatar sequel was on the way, director James Cameron has yet to shoot it. He’s basically been preparing the film for production this whole time. In that time, my excitement for any kind of Avatar sequel has pretty much disappeared.

While talking to the Montreal Gazette, Cameron confirmed when the movie will be released, when he plans to start shooting it, and what he’s accomplished in the last two years of development.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target. At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story. We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

It’s great that he’s actually finally to the point where he can start shooting the movie. He’s obviously done a ton of work to prepare for it, and I hope it all pays off. It will be interesting to see if Fox can actually rebuild the hype for Avatar after all these years. At this point, I really don’t care that he’s making this new set of films, but maybe once we start seeing footage from it that will all change.

I’m a big fan of Cameron’s work, and I really hope he can pull this off and give us something as cool as the first Avatar film. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out, and if the massive audience of the first will be there for him when the sequel is released. There will be two other sequels that follow that will be released each year after.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver are all set to return to the franchise. The sequels are currently being written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

The original 2009 Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all time with $2.782 billion worldwide. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on track to beat it, though. It'll be interesting to see if it overtakes it.

Are you excited about Avatar 2 still? Or are you going to need a little push to see it?
