James Mangold Explains Why He Cut Mutant Cameos Out of LOGAN

As the day swiftly approaches that Logan hits theaters and Hugh Jackman hangs up his adamantium claws for good, some fans have been desperately hoping for one last chance to see Wolverine and Deadpool on screen together. (I mean, they’ve technically been on screen together before, but we don’t like to talk about that.) Most of that has focused on the possibility of a Wolverine cameo in Deadpool 2, but it seems like there was once a chance for Wade Wilson to pop up in Logan. Director James Mangold told We Got This Covered:

“There were times early on in the story where I played with the idea of Hugh coming along, and I don’t want to give away anything, but I played with there being an underground railroad where there were a couple of other mutants that he met on the journey. It always seemed to detract from the loneliness of the story though and became a kind of cameo.
“Still, there was always a curiosity. I’m so cautious of it though, despite how much fans want it to happen. You find these moments where you’re trying to please people and write these scenes where they’ll bump into somebody but it always just seems like an awkward cameo unless you can make it fit organically and the character is integral to the story.”

So he doesn’t say that any of those mutants traveling the underground were Deadpool, but it would have left the door open a bit. I am personally glad that Ryan Reynolds won’t be turning up in Logan. It sounds like Mangold was serious about telling the best possible story, and while I haven’t seen the film yet, if the trailers are giving us even a 50% accurate read of the film’s tone, there is no room for the wisecracking’ Wade Wilson in Logan’s mutant desolation. It seems like it would just be really out of place and distracting, unless you made some sort of alternate universe sad-sack Wade Wilson, and I don’t think that’s what anyone was hoping for either.

So it looks like our last great hope for a Deadpool/Wolverine meet up is still in Deadpool 2, and it still sounds like that may be totally possible, so don’t give up yet.
