Johnny Depp in Talks To Join Tom Hanks in Crime Thriller TRIPLE FRONTIER

After years in development, it seems like Triple Frontier may finally start production sometime soon. Written by The Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal and originally intended as a directing vehicle for Kathryn Bigelow, All is Lost and A Most Violent Year director J.C. Chandor will now direct the crime thriller, which takes its title from "the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime."

Variety reports that Johnny Depp is in early talks to join the movie. He was reportedly interested back when Bigelow was going to make this her Hurt Locker follow-up, and he's still exploring the idea of joining the cast under the leadership of Chandor. I've liked two of the three movies Chandor has directed so far (Margin Call and A Most Violent Year), so I'm excited to see what he can do with what sounds like a more straightforward crime thriller. The producers apparently still have an offer out to Tom Hanks for one of the ensemble roles; Hanks has been attached to the movie for at least the past five years, so it seems like a project he really likes. Will Smith was also attached at one point, but he had to drop out recently due to a scheduling conflict with his upcoming film Collateral Beauty.

We'll keep you in the loop on further developments, but this is shaping up to be a promising movie, and hopefully teaming with someone like Hanks will cause Depp to step his game up a little bit.
