Joss Whedon Wants to Direct a STAR WARS Spin-Off Movie

Writer/director Joss Whedon has been relatively quiet ever since he wrapped Avengers: Age of Ultron, a film that took a huge toll on him both personally and professionally. But a year and a half after that movie's release, Whedon seems to be slowly regaining his footing and ready to move back into the world at large. In a wide-ranging interview with Complex (read the whole piece here), he revealed that he's writing a new original screenplay, but he's also interested in jumping into the director's chair for a movie set in a galaxy far, far away.

First up, I'll let him describe the new script he's working on:

I'm in the middle of a screenplay that I am extremely passionate about, and I am going to be extremely passionate about it again on November 9. It’s definitely a departure from the things that I’m known for. It's as dark as anything I've ever written...I just said, "OK, id, your turn." I would write scenes and be like, "Oh this is great! I shouldn’t be allowed near people." It’s a historical fiction slash horror movie about a time when the world was going insane, World War II. I got to tell you: I was in Germany and Poland doing research for this movie and I was seeing so many parallels [to the U.S.]. And I know it's a shopworn thing to compare the orange guy to the little guy with the mustache, but you see things, indelible things in terms of propaganda, the state of the country, and the parallels are eerie as fuck.

So that sounds like it has some deeper thematic relevance, so I'll be excited to see how he explores that further when he gets around to making it.

But the bigger point of discussion, though, is the fact that Whedon wants to direct one of the A Star Wars Story spinoff movies.

So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, I’m in. Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, "I don't want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?" But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, "I want to do that." To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.

That sounds like a dream matchup for Whedon, and I imagine his fans would be pretty happy about it, too. What's stopping Disney from giving him a call? They already know he can handle the size and scale of a project that large. And considering how limitless the possibilities for spinoffs are in that universe, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we eventually see him behind the camera for one of those films in a few years.
