Judd Apatow on FREAKS AND GEEKS Revival: "Anything Can Happen"

When people bring up TV shows that fans believe were unfairly cancelled before their time, Freaks and Geeks is right up there next to Firefly in those conversations. Paul Feig (Spy, Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters) and producer Judd Apatow were able to bring together a phenomenal cast and capture a period in time that made things

At the TCAs promoting his new Netflix series, Love, Apatow talked about the potential for a Freaks and Geeks revival or reboot (via Variety):

“I don’t think so,” he said, talking to a small group of reporters, when asked if he’d want to revisit the “Freaks and Geeks” characters. “I think we had a beautiful poetic ending, and it’s a miracle that it worked so well. You don’t want to see what happened in the diner after ‘The Sopranos’ ended. As much as at the time it threw you, as the years passed you think, that was a brilliant ending so I don’t think we would mess with it, but you never know — anything can happen.

“There’s something about the show that’s timeless because we were trying to write about the era before technology so it doesn’t look goofy because they’re holding tiny cell phones, so we’re very lucky that way.”

While there is no revival in the works, Apatow raved about the cast, which included James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, Busy Philipps and Linda Cardellini.

“They’re so talented and we knew it at the time, and that’s why it was so heartbreaking [the show was canceled] because we had a sense that it was an amazing collection of people.”

This is one of those things that I think most fans of the show probably don't want to see. It may sound good in theory, but actually getting everyone together for a sequel to continue that story may end up hurting the show's legacy. Just look at the fourth season of Arrested Development for an example of what I'm talking about. It sounds like Feig mostly agrees with that assessment, because last year he talked about his hesitation toward rebooting the show:

"I don't want to do anything to revisit Freaks and Geeks that isn't awesome, and so in general, I personally have stayed away from it. I still haven't had that idea where you're like, 'Oh my God, that's it. This is gold. This is the way to do it. People are going to love this.' I'm so proud of what it was, the last thing I ever want to do, or want any of us to do, is ruin the memory of it."

You can read more of Feig's thoughts here, and Apatow's Love premieres on Netflix on Friday, February 19th.
