Spidey #1 Takes Peter Parker Back To High School

Today Marvel announced Spidey #1, the first issue in a new series that focuses on Peter Parker’s early years as a teen in high school. The series aims to be a good stepping on point for new fans of the character, and is being helmed by writer Robbie Thompson and artist Nick Bradshaw.

“Out of the 700+ issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN” shares Spider-Man Editor Nick Lowe, “Peter Parker was only in high school for thirty issues! Stan and Steve covered a lot, but there’s a lot of the high school and early super hero experience still on the table.”

I never realized that so little time was spent on this era in Peter's life, and when you put it that way, it does actually make sense. There is a whole new gaggle of Spider-Man fans out there that didn’t experience the early years of their favorite hero. Best of all, it is in continuity, so everything counts.

“Everyone remembers their FIRST Spider-Man comic,” says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “SPIDEY aims to be perfect as someone’s first Spider-Man comic, or their one thousandth. We’re not looking to re-tell stories here. What Robbie [Thompson] and Nick [Bradshaw] have put together is an exciting new take on Spider-Man at his arguably most iconic incarnation, and will feel fresh to new and old fans alike.”

This premise also gives the creators some room to introduce some new rogues to Spidey’s gallery, and bring them in to the current status-quo down the line. Plus, it doesn’t have the alternate universe tag, so that keeps out some of the confusion associated with multiple universe setups. The pencils of Nick Bradshaw seem to be a perfect fit, with the classic bold lines of classic Spidey with some modern touches.

Spidey #1 releases this fall.
