MONSTERPOCALYPSE Feature Film Will Be Directed by EVIL DEAD Remake's Fede Alvarez

Monsterpocalypse is a board game from Privateer Press that has been on the road to the big screen since 2010 when Tim Burton was looking to direct it. That production fell apart, though. Now there’s a bidding war on the feature film rights because the studios see it as the next big franchise.

The film package that was shopped to the studios included director Fede Alvarez, who helmed the crazy, blood-filled 2013 Evil Dead remake. He is also set to co-write the screenplay with his writing partner Rodo Sayagues.

As of right now, Warner Bros., DreamWorks, and Sony are trying to get in on the Monsterpocalypse action, which is kind of like a Pacific Rim type concept. In fact, that’s the reason the first attempt to make this movie didn’t work. While Monsterpocalypse was in development, Guillermo del Toro released Pacific Rim, so they decided to put it on hold.

The game involves a group of humans in robot-type mech suits who battle a variety of evil monsters. It’s all set in a metropolis-type setting full of people and buildings. According to THR, the “new package has a take that is substantially different from the previous iteration, let alone Pacific Rim, although the core concept — humans versus monsters — remains.”

I’d love to see Alvarez take on this project. Before he directed Evil Dead he made a great short film called Panic Attack! that featured giant robots attacking the South American city of Montevideo. Monsterpocalypse seems like a movie that is right up his ally. I posted that short film for you to watch below.
