Oscar Isaac's X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Costume Will Use Both Practical and Digital Effects

Oscar Isaac, who will be playing the title villain in X-Men: Apocalypse, spoke to Yahoo UK about the costume and makeup he will be wearing.

“It’ll be a mix [of practical and digital]. I haven’t had a script so I haven’t had a chance to look through the script and see what the exact requirements are, but I think it’ll be a mixture of physical, aided with some robotic technology.”

This could turn out to be very cool. We've seen director Bryan Singer consistently choose makeup over digital effects, which is in direct contrast to what Marvel Studios did with Thanos, a digital motion capture character. Another recent superhero movie character that had both practical and digital effects was Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Because Apocalypse can control his molecules, he's been seen in the comics to be able to change the scale of his body. Add to that the ability to absorb and project energy, and it really seems to me that the digital effects are necessary to the character.

Isaac talks more about about the makeup process:

“After we finish here I’m heading to do a head cast [for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’], which they do often. You spend 3-4 hours with them putting plaster all over your head and they get a sense of what your face is like and what shape your head is, so they can start figuring out the costume and the make up and all that stuff, which is pretty fun.”

I'm not claustrophobic, but having my face covered for hours would drive me nuts.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016 in the United States.
