PACIFIC RIM 2 Won't Happen Any Time Soon

Even though director Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Travis Bachman have been developing a story and script for Pacific Rim 2, Legendary Pictures is in no rush to get it into production. Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull was recently asked about the sequel in an interview with I Am Rogue. They want to make the movie, but according to him, it's just not ready yet. Here's what he had to say:

"Here’s the deal. We’re very close with Guillermo. He’s doing Crimson Peak for us right now. With the amount of money that we did on Pacific Rim, over $400 million, it didn’t quite hit our expectations, but it did better than a lot of other films. If there’s another great story to tell with Guillermo then we’re all over it because we think it’s really hard to create one of these things from scratch. The movie did really well on home video and merchandise, and it certainly has a big international following. We’re not just going to do Pacific Rim 2 just to do it. Right now we’re talking to Guillermo del Toro. If we can crack the story, we all think it’s great, and it’s him at the helm, then fantastic. But right now there’s nothing going on officially to proclaim."

From previous interviews, it seems like Del Toro and Bachman do have a good idea of where they want to take the story. Del Toro even talked about introducing a Jaeger and Kaiju hybrid monster in the sequel, saying,

"I’ll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you’re gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special. Just think about it for a second. We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there. We’ve drifted with a Kaiju brain. Well, then start riffing on that and you’ll get to something."

That would be pretty incredible to see. Who knows, though, maybe the studio wants to take things in another direction. Del Toro has always been an incredibly busy guy, and he seems to always be working on multiple projects at once, including stuff he's not directing. Right now he's currently in production on the horror film Crimson Peak, which comes out on October 16th, 2015. He doesn't have any project locked in after that, but I'm sure he's got several options to choose from. Two of which could include his long-awaited Justice League Dark movie and Pacific Rim 2. I'd be very happy seeing either one of them.
