Rebecca Hall Talks About Her Villainous Role in IRON MAN 3 Being Reduced

We all know that Iron Man 3 should have been a much better film, but the script went through so many different reworks that we ended up with what we got. Don't get me wrong — I enjoyed the film, but I think it could have been better.

A lot of fans were disappointed in the big twist involving The Mandarin. In case you don't remember, Ben Kingsley played an actor playing The Mandarin to throw the heroes off the scent of the true villain mastermind, Aldrich Killian, who was played by Guy Pearce

I actually kind of enjoyed the twist, but Marvel definitely got some backlash from it. Turns out writer and director Shane Black originally planned on having a completely different villain in the film. It was originally supposed to be Rebecca Hall's Mya Hansen. She originally signed on to play the villain in the film until the Marvel executives swooped in to change it. When talking to the Toronto Sun about it, Hall revealed:

“I signed on to do something that was a substantial role. She wasn’t entirely the villain – there have been several phases of this – but I signed on to do something very different to what I ended up doing.”

So what happened? Why did Marvel decide to minimize her villainous role? Black previously explained:

“All I’ll say is this, on the record: There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem. Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft. We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that cannot stand and we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female…So, we had to change the entire script because of toy making.”

That's just ridiculous. Seriously, how many action figures did Marvel sell of Aldrich Killian? Does anyone even own an Aldrich Killian action figure? I've heard a lot of the decisions involving these kinds of things came from Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter, who is no longer involved with the Marvel Studios movies. Hall adds:

“Look, (Marvel) is paying for their mistakes right now and I applaud them for casting Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. Hallelujah. It’s about time women started being the heroes of things.”

I would have liked to see Rebecca Hall's villainous character fully realized in the film. At least Pepper Potts got to jump in an Iron Man suit, see some action, and save the day.
