RESIDENT EVIL CLASSIC and REVELATIONS 2 - Getting Back To Basics

To say Resident Evil 6 was a disappointment for fans is an understatement, however, there is a silver lining here, as Capcom has seemingly taken that critical failure to heart and charted a new course for the franchise. That said, its not really a new course, its more of a reunion with the gameplay that made the franchise the behemoth it is today. While just one would be worthwhile, we are actually getting two games that harken back to those classic times, and those are Resident Evil Classic and Resident Evil Revelations 2.

The game that defined the survival-horror genre is back! Thrill to all the original chills and spills in this remastered update of the classic Resident Evil game. Relive an enhanced version of the game that defined the survival-horror genre and launched a franchise that has sold over 61 million copies!

Let’s talk about Classic first. The decision to remaster the original Resident Evil for next gen consoles does two things. One, it gives the series faithful a nice sign that the publisher is coming out of the delusional fantasy it's been living in that said we wanted more action in our horror games. Sure, Resident Evil 4 was heralded as a new classic for the franchise, but while it leaned on new combat mechanics, it still didn't move as far away from its core gameplay as 5 and 6 did. While I enjoyed 5 a great deal, it was more for its co-op campaign and less for the scares that I’m used to from the series. Don’t even get me started on 6.

Two, it gives a new generation of players a chance to experience a genre that has been MIA for quite some time now. Evil Within is the only pulse the genre has really had lately, as the Silent Hills have been steadily going down in quality (though Del Toro and Kojima should resuscitate that nicely as well) and games like Dead Space are again more focused on action than survival. Though there was at least one bright spot in the franchise recently, and that brings us to our next point.

The one promising entry in recent years is also getting a sequel — Resident Evil Revelations 2. Originally released exclusively for the 3DS and then ported to consoles, the first game starred fan favorite Jill Valentine, while Revelations 2 will feature the return of another fan favorite, Claire Redfield. Revelations 2 will also see the debut of Moira Burton, daughter of Mr. Red Vest himself, Barry Burton. The official description of the game brings back memories of one of my personal favorites Code Veronica, but take a look for yourself.

The beginning of the Resident Evil Revelations 2 tale sees fan favorite Claire Redfield make a dramatic return to the horrors that haunted her in the past .Survivor of the Raccoon City incident depicted in previous Resident Evil games, Claire now works for the anti-bioterrorism organisation Terra Save. Moira Burton, new recruit and daughter of Resident Evil legend Barry Burton, is attending her welcome party for Terra Save when unknown armed forces storm the office. Claire and Moira are knocked unconscious and awaken later to find themselves in a dark and abandoned detention facility. Working together, they must find out who took them and to what sinister end. With the terrifying Afflicted enemies waiting around every dark corner, players will need to use their ammo and weapon supply wisely, in classic survival horror style. Will Claire and Moira make it out alive and discover what’s led to them being taken to this remote island? Who else will they come across? A story of twists and turns will have players guessing the next step at every turn.

The episodic structure of the game is also intriguing. The game will release in 4 parts, distributed weekly. You can also get the whole season package which will net you some additional gameplay, or grab the retail release later on. Each episode will be $5.99, and will be available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. It will be interesting to see if the concept that works so well for Telltale’s Walking Dead works for Capcom here, but I for one am a fan of the format. You can catch the teaser for Revelations 2 below, and some screens for the game as well.

This concept teaser trailer portrays the essence of Resident Evil Revelations 2. Hidden secrets beckon to be discovered by anyone with eyes and wits sharp enough to find them.
