Ridley Scott Talks About BLADE RUNNER 2 and Even More Potential Sequels

Yahoo has a good interview with Ridley Scott about his new movie The Martian, but the most interesting stuff comes when they touch on the topics of Blade Runner 2 and his planned Prometheus sequels. When asked if he'd have final cut on director Denis Villenueve's Blade Runner 2, Scott said:

Oh, yeah. I mean, I always have final cut on everything, really. Partly because I’m very user-friendly. I always believe when you’re given X amount of money by someone to f–k around with and make a movie, you can’t draw lines in the sand. If I was an investor and you did that to me, I’d remove your ankles. So don’t do the auteur s–t. I respect the guy for giving the money and I respect the studio for saying, “Yeah, you want to do this, here we go.”

Since Scott is currently developing four sequels to Prometheus (a fact he didn't dispute in the interview), the reporter asked if he'd be doing the same thing for Blade Runner. Here's Scott's sort of depressing response:

Listen: Everyone else is, so why not? I love to work. The French say, “Work to live,” and I live to work. I’m very lucky to have a job that I adore. All my kids do the same thing. Some of it’s trying, but it’s like being in professional sport. It’s so competitive [that] you better keep bouncing the ball. You can’t rest.

Seems like a flimsy reason for making sequels, doesn't it? I guess he's just being honest, but I think fans might have been happier with a response more along the lines of, "we have a great story planned out and a real reason to revisit this universe" or something instead of just "why not?"

In any case, he teased a bit about what we can expect to see in Blade Runner 2 and the future of the franchise with star Ryan Gosling:

You once said he’s a Replicant in the first one.
Of course he’s a bloody Replicant! He’s going to have to admit it.
So don’t Replicants die after four years?
I’m not going to tell you. You’ll have to see the story. It’ll all make sense.
And you’re going to hand over the franchise to Ryan Gosling after that.
Yeah, yeah.

Prometheus 2 (which is actually going to be called Alien: Paradise Lost) begins filming in January of 2016, and Blade Runner 2 should be going before cameras sometime after that.
