Sean Astin on Why He Believes THE GOONIES 2 Will Happen One Day

Last year the possibility of a Goonies sequel got really serious when director Richard Donner said that there was a 1000% chance that it would happen. It was then reported Steven Spielberg had written a story, but that story still needed to be polished. The last update we had came from producer Frank Marshall, in which he said:

“[The Goonies 2] in discussion. [Donner's] talked to us about it, and we’ve talked to him. It’s all about the story. We don’t just do sequels to do them. The story has to be there.
“You don’t want to disappoint the fans by just doing a schlocky movie. You want to do a real legitimate movie. It’s not going to be a sequel. In the Amblin spirit of Goonies, that’s what has to be.”

Now it seems like there actually might be something brewing. Over the weekend, Sean Astin tweeted a message to his fans saying that he’d be returning for the sequel. It was vague, but definitive. He then deleted the tweet. It sounds like he said something prematurely. Then yesterday he took to Facebook to talk about his thoughts on the sequel and explains why he believes that one day it will happen. This also serves as damage control for the tweet that he sent out.

"I have always believed that there will be a Goonies Sequel, because Steven Spielberg told me in 1988 that he wanted to make one. Richard Donner has said that it is in the works. Warner Brothers is enjoying a very successful merchandising experience with the 'title.' If it gets made in my lifetime, I will root for it, whether I'm in it or not. If it gets made after I'm no longer here to be in it or to watch it, I still know in my heart, guts, wherever, the it will get made. The fact that I'm asked about it everywhere I go is amusing. The fact that people just make stuff up about it, also hilarious. Now, I have said all I am going to say on the subject until 5 minutes from now when another Goonies loving neighbor wants me to give them the inside scoop. Spoiler, no scoop."

Astin previously stated that he was so sure that a Goonies sequel would happen that he would bet his children on it. There is obviously something happening behind-the-scenes. It would be great if we got some kind of official confirmation or official denial so that we could put this thing to rest.

As a fan of The Goonies, I would love to see where these characters are in their lives, and how awesome would it be to see the gang back together again for another Goonies adventure? Of course, if nothing happened at all, that would be fine, too. If they did move forward with something, I'd much rather see a sequel than a reboot.
