Simon Kinberg Says X-FORCE Movie Could Be Rated R

In the wake of Deadpool's massive box office success, it shouldn't be too long until we hear about an X-Force movie officially getting the green light and moving into production at 20th Century Fox. Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow wrote a script a couple of years ago (creator Rob Liefeld loved it) and was supposed to be directing the live-action feature, but that never ended up happening. But Ryan Reynolds has spoken about X-Force as "a priority," and considering how much money Deadpool made this past weekend, I'd guess Fox will push that plan through fairly quickly.

At the same Q&A in which the sad news came out that Deadpool won't get a director's cut, Collider asked producer Simon Kinberg, who basically serves as the godfather of Fox's superhero films, if there were any other properties he thought could end up being rated R, and this is what he said:

“I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way. X-Force I could see being R-rated, and who knows?”

And before you start jumping for joy, Kinberg didn't confirm that the film would 100% have an R-rating. “I’m saying I could imagine a universe in which [X-Force is R-rated],” he clarified. With Deadpool 2 in development and the X-Men movies about to undergo a handoff to a new cast in this year's X-Men: Apocalypse, Fox is surely looking for ways to maximize profits with its superhero fare, and now that Deadpool has proven that R-rated Marvel films can be financially viable, perhaps the studio will allow an X-Force movie to appeal to an older crowd. We'll keep you posted when more about an X-Force film inevitably comes to light.
