SPLIT Trailer: James McAvoy is a Kidnapper With Multiple Personalities in M. Night Shyamalan's Latest Thriller

Update: An earlier version of this article incorrectly asserted that McAvoy's character has schizophrenia. That was a mistake: it appears he actually has Dissociative Identity Disorder (aka Multiple Personality Disorder). The headline and body of the article have been altered to reflect that.

Is M. Night Shyamalan in the middle of a comeback? His movie The Visit was pretty well-liked when it came out last year, and now Universal has released the latest trailer for Split, a suspense thriller in which James McAvoy plays a kidnapper with 23 personalities vying for dominance in his body and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as one of the young girls he's taken hostage. Before The Visit, Shyamalan was on a legendarily bad streak of films, but this one actually looks pretty good. And the idea that one of McAvoy's character's personalities could be a terrifying beast (that he might actually have to physically alter his body chemistry to let out) is very intriguing.

Split hits theaters on January 20, 2017.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities—each with unique physical attributes—to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others.  Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.
