The Film Rights to NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER Are Back With Marvel

Back in 2014, a rumor surfaced that Legendary Pictures was developing a feature film based on Marvel's Namor the Sub-Mariner. Universal Pictures apparently owned the rights to it. Later on, Kevin Feige said that things were a bit more complicated than that.

Well, it sounds like the complications are no longer an issue because Marvel CCO Joe Quesada has indicated that the rights to the King of Atlantis are back with Marvel. During an appearance on Kevin Smith's Fat Man on Batman podcast, Quesada was asked if Namor is part of the MCU and if they had the film rights, and this was his reply:

"I can't speak for studios...As far as I know, yeah we do. It’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony...Yeah."

As CCO, Quesada is a pretty well-informed guy at Marvel, and this is something I believe he would have knowledge of. When asked if Namor would end up being a part of the MCU, he said:

"I cannot confirm or deny, sir."

There's always the chance that it could happen. A couple years ago Feige was asked if Marvel would make a Namor movie. He said yes and then explained the complications of the film rights:

"Yes, but it’s slightly more complicated than that. Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that means we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in."

So it seems like may they have actually worked those things out. If they have, according to Feige, one day we will Namor introduced in the MCU. Unless he changed his mind after they got the rights back.
