The Reason Loki Was Cut From AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Before Avengers: Age of Ultron came out in theaters, it was revealed that Tom Hiddleston's Loki had been cut from the film. At the time of the reveal, writer/director Joss Whedon explained that what they ended up shooting "didn't play." We later learned a little bit about what the cut scene entailed. Whedon explained:

"We even had a little reference to the fact that he’s taken the throne, which was Tom doing his Anthony Hopkins impression when Thor says, 'Oh, what would father say?' Then Tom does his Hopkins impression, and Thor’s like, 'That is uncanny!' It’s sort of like his subconscious is telling him that Loki was imitating his father. But he would never make that connection."

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the actor revealed why the scene ended up on the cutting room floor. The call to take the scene out came from came from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. When asked why exactly the scene was cut, Hiddleston said:

When they screened it, audiences somehow believed that Loki was controlling Ultron, and [Kevin Feige] thought that was unbalancing the film.

If it was confusing test audience members, then it was a good thing that the scene was removed. I could see why some people might think that. I thought the movie worked just fine without Loki around. He'll eventually be back up on the big screen, but we don't know when that will be yet. I assume the next time that we see Loki will be in Thor: Ragnarok, which may have found a director in Taika Waititi.

Loki has been a fan favorite villain since he was first introduced in the first Thor film. Hopefully he'll stick around for a little while longer.
