THE WALKING DEAD Scoops Up Another Veteran From THE WIRE!

If it wasn’t obvious that The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is a fan of The Wire before, it is starting to become clear.

THR is reporting that Seth Gilliam, who played Detective Ellis Carver on all five seasons of the HBO hit The Wire, has been cast as a regular AMC mega-hit The Walking Dead. Here is what the report had to say about the casting: (Warning! There are some potential SPOILERS! Just thought you should know so you can’t get mad at me later.)

The casting breakdown -- which used the dummy name of Michael -- described the character as friendly with a puckish demeanor who also has a haunted side, though that is not expected to be accurate, either. (There also is not a character with the name Michael in the ongoing comics series, unless you count a small boy named Mikey.)

THR's best educated guess is that Gilliam is playing Gabriel Stokes, a preacher who first crosses paths with Rick in the 61st issue of the comics -- just before the ragtag band of survivors encounters the Hunters (aka the cannibals). Not long afterward, Gabriel reveals the dark lengths to which he went in order to ensure his survival and becomes a member of Rick's community. (He's also still alive in the comics.)

I am a huge fan of The Wire, and I love seeing these actors enter the world of TWD. I hope that the cross casting continues. I have been reading the comics and so far the casting has been spot on, which makes the show that much better for me. Needless to say, I am stoked about this latest casting news.
