Video Essay Explores The Character Building of Quentin Tarantino

There was a time in my life during which I thought Quentin Tarantino was an overrated filmmaker. I bought into the complaints about him ripping off plot points from other movies, and for a long time, I admittedly didn't understand how difficult it was for him to create dynamic characters that worked on their own terms. Death Proof really disappointed me and that was the moment I thought he went too far up his own ass, but seeing Inglourious Basterds completely blew me away and caused me to reexamine his filmography. I still don't like Death Proof (I think it's his worst movie by far), and though I always liked Pulp Fiction, it was Basterds that opened my eyes to the genius of what QT is able to do. Suffice it to say that I'm now fully on board the bandwagon.

This video essay from Must See Films (via The Playlist) is a great way to understand some of the complexity of how Tarantino creates characters, and it has some nice tidbits for any aspiring screenwriters out there.
