10 Fun Facts About EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
Edward Scissorhands is easily one of my favorite Tim Burton films. It’s just an absolutely beautiful movie, and it's one of those stories that just completely engulfs you from start to finish. It was also the first time that Burton and Johnny Depp would work together. Who would have thought their collaboration would lead to such an iconic working relationship? It also helped solidify Depp's career as a film actor. Here are 10 fun facts from the film that I've put together that some of you may or may not be familiar with.
- Winona Ryder was attached to The Godfather Part III, but dropped out to play Kim in the film. Depp reportedly convinced her to do so, and it was a smart move on her part. Drew Barrymore was also considered for the role.
- Depp only had to say 169 words in this film. That’s a pretty easy acting gig, except for the fact he had to lose 25 pounds for the role and wear a hot leather costume the whole time.
- Vincent Price's role was supposed to be larger, but the legendary actor was very ill with emphysema and Parkinson's disease so his scenes were cut down. The role was specifically written for him, and it was the last movie he was in before he died. This was the last scene he ever shot:
- Edward Scissorhands is Burton's favorite of all the films he has made, and Danny Elfman's favorite of all his soundtrack compositions.
- The little blonde kid on the Slip & Slide at the beginning of the film is Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys.
- The neighborhood in the film is based on Burton's hometown of Burbank, but the houses used were located in a real community in Florida. They were completely unchanged except for their garish exterior paint.
- The film was originally written as a musical, but it didn’t pan out. Burton would revisit the musical concept on films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride.
- Gary Oldman was offered the title role but he turned it down. Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, and Robert Downey Jr. were all considered for the role. Apparently Cruise wanted a happier ending, which is weird because it kind of was a happy ending.
- When Edward runs away back to his home, Depp collapsed from heat exhaustion due to the extreme temperatures and the leather costume.
- Crispin Glover (Back to the Future) auditioned for the role of Jim, but the role went to Anthony Michael Hall.
