Director Sam Mendes has found his next film project with a 1980s set love story titled Empire of Light. This is Mendes’ first film since directing his Oscar-winning World War I drama, 1917, and Olivia Colman (The Crown) is set to star.

Mendes is also working once again with cinematographer Roger Deakins, who previously worked with Mendes on 1917, Skyfall and Revolutionary Road.

Mendes is not only directing the movie, but he wrote the script for the film as well. This is actually his first solo outing as a screenwriter. We don’t have many details to share, but the story is described as a love story, “set in and around a beautiful old cinema, on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.”

The filmmaker is a great storyteller and director and the films he’s made in his career all have a high quality of production and a certain prestige. While I don’t know much about this new project of his, I’m curious to see how this turns out.

The film is set up at Searchlight and they are aiming for a 2022 release.
