GeekTyrant Salutes: Alan Smithee

by thedude

Thats right, its everyone's favorite director who doesn't actually exist. Alan Smithee has a resume as long and distinguished as my johnson (too much? Hey, whatever I can do to throw in a random TOP GUN quote). If you have not heard of our good friend Mr. Smithee, here is the skinny; Alan Smithee was born in 1968, coincidentally the same year he began his directorial debut with the film "Death of a Gunfighter". Since then, Alan has had the priveledge of being the scapegoat immortalized on a film's credits whenever an artist (mostly the director) does not feel that his vision was done justice by a studio's final cut of a film.

Needless to say, Mr. Smithee's career has not been without hard times. In 2000, the Director's Guild of America retired the use of the pseudonym "Alan Smithee" after knowledge of the alias became too well known. Smithee, however, has not taken the banishment lying down and has popped up in several films and television shows since then. Damn the Man!!
