Dr. Venkman Reviews: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

by Joey Paur

You know what? You may not believe me when I say this, but this is one of my favorite movies of the year. Not only one of my favorite but one of the best made. As much as I liked Juno, I liked ‘Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' even more. You may think I'm nuts for saying that, but I was able to connect with the characters and story in this film better.

I honestly remember having nights like the one these characters had. Pulling all nighters not knowing where the night will take you. My friends and I had many crazy adventures like this when we were teenagers, and this movie took me back to that place that I haven't been to in such a long time and I loved it.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist follows a group of high school friends as they go to the city to try and find their favorite band playing at a secret location. Nicks girlfriend recently broke up with him for another guy. His gay band friends are trying to get his mind off her and onto to Norah who they think is a perfect fit for him. Norah on the other hand is babysitting her friend who has a tendency to get mad drunk. She is also dealing with a douche bag ex-boyfriend. So to bring the magic of Nick and Norah together the gay band friends take the drunk friend off Norah's hands and send them out into the night to go find where the concert is. While they are out trying to figure out each other the band looses Norah's friend and they all set out to go looking for her.

I liked everything about this movie! It was funny, sweet, exciting, and memorable. Nick and Norah is an Instant classic. It is a fresh of breath air with all of the crazy raunchy teen comedies that are being made. This movie speaks to everyone.

The casting for this film was perfect. The characters were great. You liked the ones you were supposed to like and hated the ones you were supposed to hate. Michael Cera as Nick was fantastic. You can't help but like watching him act on screen he is just a likable guy. He sports that awkwardly funny personality but he is much smarter in this than some of the other roles he has played. Kat Dennings as Norah was adorable as hell. She was excellent in this movie and cute as a button. She played this character incredibly well. The chemistry between Michael and Kat was so awesomely natural and real. The guys that played Nick gay band friends were all very good. Aaron Yoo, Rafi Gavron, and Jonathan B. Wright. I like how they portrayed their characters. They acted like real people and not the gay overly flamboyant stereotype. Ari Graynor played Norah's drunk friend Caroline and she played as good a drunk as anyone else. Alexis Dziena played Nicks Ex Tris and she was good as the bitchy ex-girlfriend that you just want to die. The cast as a whole was excellent.

I had a great time watching this movie. Teenagers and young adults are going to love this movie. The movie really isn't targeted to people over 30, but they may end up liking it as well. It depends on their personalities. For me this is one of the best movies I have seen this year. It wont get nominated for an Oscar or anything but it was a flat out great film. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a fun feel good time at the movies.

Whatever you choose to see, always remember to enjoy your time at the movies.
