Green Lantern Movie Talk from Co-Writer Marc Guggenheim

by Joey Paur

From what I have heard about Green lantern so far it is supposed to be a pretty solid comic book flick. The movie is being directed by Greg Berlanti who is also a co-writer. He wrote and produced many shows for TV such as 'Everwood' and 'Dirty Sexy Money' and has not really directed anything, so I can't really judge yet. I liked some of the shopws he's worked on. I'm shocked he got the gig. They are on the third studio draft of the 'Green Lantern' script and there have been a few changes along the way. Guggenheim recently sat down with MTV to give an update on whats been going down.

"[The changes are] nothing that's affecting the storyline, really, It's pretty well set. But sometimes we'll move a scene to a different location for budget purposes, perhaps in an already established location instead of a new one. It's a question of, which locations can we live without? It's a constant process to streamline what you're going through, even after the film is shot, when you're cutting things in the edit. That's what the rewrite process is like, how you sand down the roughness of the movie to its smoothest."

Well, every movie has budget constraints and the script is the first place to start when cutting corners. The director is also in constant talks with the designers of the film. They really want to make sure they get the style right for this thing, and it sounds like it's paying off.

"I'll come over and drool [at the designs], I will say that the design work is truly mindblowing, and it's hard to pick a favorite. But the shots on Oa are spectacular. What Oa looks like has never been seen on film."

So that sounds encouraging. I can't wait until we get to start seeing some really designs from this thing. As you know they have no cast The Green Lantern yet but there are rumors floating around of Ryan Gosling, Matthew Settle, and David Boreanaz. But what you might not know is that the Man of Steel is going to make a small cameo in the film and rumors of Brandon Roth or Tom Welling making an appearance.

"There were rumors that Tom Welling would have a cameo in ‘Batman Begins' as a young Clark Kent, to meet up with a young Bruce Wayne, But you have to be careful when you do things like that, because it sounds great in concept, but when you sit down to watch it, it poses the danger of pulling you out of the film."

But then he admits:

"The fanboy in me would love that. Robert Downey, Jr. in ‘The Hulk' was awesome. I love that stuff in general, and I think the fans would enjoy it. Brandon Routh or even Tom Welling [in 'Green Lantern'] would be awesome. And anything is possible. The beauty part of being the writer, though, is that I don't actually have to make that judgment call."

So there you have it folks! I have high hopes for this movie. Would you like to see either Tom Welling or Brandon Routh make an appearance as Superman? If so which one? I would go with Welling.
