What movie do you want to see this weekend? 12/12

by Joey Paur

This week we have an decent amount of good movies that are coming out. I want to see them all. I have no idea how I will be able to do that this next week, but I am going to try dammit! Starting tonight with a midnight show of 'the Day the Earth Stood Still'. Then I want to hit up 'Gran Tarino' and 'Doubt' followed by 'The Reader' and 'What Doesn't Kill You', then ending the week with watching 'Nothing like the Holidays' and 'Che'. If by some miracle I find the week presents gets extended I will watch 'Timecrimes'. I will sacrafice the little animated movie 'Delgo' which I have never heard of. It's crazy I know, but if you know me you know I will try to make this work. What will you see?

Nothing Like the Holidays

If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that family time isn’t always a walk in the park. In Nothing Like the Holidays, two of today’s most talented actors, John Leguizamo (The Happening, The Take) and Freddy Rodriguez (“Six Feet Under,” Bobby), join Debra Messing (“Will & Grace,” “The Starter Wife”), Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider-Man 2), and director Alfredo de Villa (the award-winning Washington Heights) to tell the humorous and heartwarming story of one unforgettable family holiday.

Doubt - Limited

Cast: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams

John Patrick Shanley’s 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning Doubt is a riveting exploration of paranoia and suspicion in the Catholic Church. Set in a Bronx parochial school in 1964—just as the Vatican II reforms begin to transfigure the Church—evidence of a priest’s wrongdoing comes to light. Sister Aloysius, a strict school principal and traditionalist nun, faces the decision of a lifetime: Does she openly accuse a priest and give voice to her fear of his sinful actions, or does she bury her suspicions and leave room for doubt? This intense and personal power struggle between Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn ultimately calls into question both faith and justice in the shadows of this cloistered institution.

The Reader - Limited

Cast: Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, David Kross

The Reader opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair.

Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Hanna is enthralled as Michael reads to her from “The Odyssey”, "Huck Finn", and “The Lady with the Little Dog.” Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken.

Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life – this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hanna’s past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. The Reader is a haunting story about truth and reconciliation, about how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another.

Drawn against his will into the life of Tao's family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them form the gangs that foul their neighborhood.

Timecrimes - Limited

Cast: Karra Elejalde, Candela Fernández, Bárbara Goenaga

Lauded short film director Vigalondo makes his feature debut with this tense, unstoppable vision of science and natural law gone awry. A man who accidentally travels back into the past and meets himself. A naked girl in the midst of the forest. A mysterious stranger with his face wrapped in a pink bandage. A disquieting mansion on the top of a hill. All of them pieces of an unpredictable jigsaw puzzle where terror, drama and suspense will lead to an unthinkable sort of crime. Who’s the murdered? Who’s the victim? Timecrimes takes a bold, difficult premise and brings the rarely-tread time travel framework to pulse-pounding but intelligent new heights.

As Brian becomes increasingly lost in a haze of drugs and ‘jobs,’ even the love he has for his wife (Amanda Peet) and his children does not seem like it will be enough to redeem him.
