Gore Verbinski Developing a movie about the role-playing world
Some people may find this type of movie pretty depressing. I myself don't play online role-playing games but I know people that do, people that are addicted to it and have lost jobs, spouses, and family over it.
Gore Verbinski and Universal Pictures has nabbed the rights to a article that was featured in The Wall Street Journal that will be used as the basis for the movie. It will be about the online fantasy role-playing world and how it impacts peoples real lives. Variety reports:
Verbinski will develop the film as a directing vehicle; Steven Knight ("Eastern Promises") will pen the script.
The article by Alexandra Alter focuses on a married man who spends as many as 20 hours a day on a computer, existing through an avatar who is a thriving, musclebound entrepreneur. In reality, he is a diabetic, chain-smoking 53-year-old.
Like I said this could be a pretty depressing movie. I recently read an article about a guy that plays World of War Craft and owns over 30 accounts and plays for all his characters at the same time on a set up he has will over 30 monitors. It cost him over $10,000 a month to do this.
I am sure some people have it under control, but the ones that don't would make for a really interesting documentary, but I guess they are going strait to making the movie. It just seems like a whole new and interesting world that not many people really know about. What do you think of all this?
