'Creature From the Black Lagoon' Remake Update

by Joey Paur

As we have reported before the Universal Pictures classic 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon' is being remade. I am a big fan of all the original Universal Horror classics and this is one I really didn't think of getting remade. The script for the film is complete and they are moving forward with it, but it is not greenlit. Latinoreview recently got a chance to talk with the writer and producer of the film Gary Ross, and he give us some insight on what we can expect.

On the Tone of the film:

It's not campy. It's not like the original, it's not, my Dad wrote the original, so it's not a reference to what the original is. We take it sort of seriously. We found some scientific under pinnings for it, which my Dad actually felt in the original. In fact, he based it on a lung fish that was found around that time. So a lot of that was his. And kind of the conflict between science and uh...

So they are taking this movie seriously, and it will revolve around science. On weather or not the tone of the film will be a throwback to the older films he says:

Actually, no. We're going to treat it with a certain amount of dignity. We're not approaching this a in a retro campy kind of way. it's set in present day. There are reasonable scientific under pinnings. It should really be an interesting journey into the jungle both for the characters and for the audience.

I myself am a big fan of the retro look, is their no dignity to that? It can still be retro and not campy. Having it set in present day could be campy as well. So far this movie is sounding seriously dignifying. They have not settled on a director for the movie yet, and they have not decided weather or not the creature will be done in CG or practical but they will most likely use a little bit of both. Ross also talks about if their will be some scares in the film.

Oh sure. We're not gonna wink at the audience and make it silly in any sort of way, we're gonna take it seriously.

Got it. Seriously silly. Who knows how this movie will turn out, it could go in so many different directions, but what it all comes down to is that it is about a creature from the Black Lagoon. Make sure to read the full interview right here.
