Spike Lee will make Michael Jordan Documentary!
Michael Jordan is one of the greatest that has ever lived. It's about time they get around to telling the world his story. Variety reports:
Spike Lee is set to shoot a feature-length documentary about Michael Jordan. Helmer told a Cannes crowd that he hopes to bring the basketball legend to the fest with the pic next year.
The NBA is financing the docu, with Lee's 40 Acres & a Mule Filmworks shingle producing.
Lee was on the Croisette to tubthump his $43 million Italy-set WWII drama "Miracle at St. Anna," an eight-minute promo of which unspooled for press and buyers Monday. Jordan docu will include extensive unseen footage shot by NBA cameras during the final two years in Jordan's career, the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. Lee and Jordan previously collaborated on a series of Nike TV commercials."Mike wants to come to Cannes, so hopefully we will be here next year," said Lee.
I'm sure Mike can go to Cannes anytime he wants. Going there with a movie is a different story though. I wonder how they are going to spin this Doc. I know for myself I am interested in Michael Jordan's real life who he really is and was during his time in the NBA. I don't want to see a candy coated film. For this to be really good and really interesting it has to be deep and real. Michael Jordan willed himself to become the most dominant player in Basketball history. Since Spike Lee had a hand in the deification of Jordan (as the creator of his Air Jordan marketing campaign), it's only right that he tear down the cheerful facade to reveal the ruthless competitor underneath. To win six NBA titles like Jordan did, you have to revel in the decimation of your rivals. Denying the guy in the other jersey has to be its own elation. By all accounts, Jordan loved destroying as much as he loved building, and maintaining, a dynasty.
This is the Michael Jordan documentary I want to see and am hoping Spike Lee will take it in this direction. But will the NBA Commissioner David Stern allow Spike Lee to humanize basketballs greatest player? I guess we'll have to wait and see. I know EMH will want to chime in on this.
