R.P. McMurphy's DVD Review: 'In Bruges'

by Billy Fisher

Well surfers, with gas prices rising and movie ticket prices following suit, we can't go to the movies everyday.  So here at Geek Tyrant we like to keep you informed on the latest films to hit dvd.  This weeks movie in the spotlight is In Bruges.  This film was directed by Martin McDonagh, who won an acadamy award in 2006 for his short flim Six Shooter.  The film also stars Collin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes.

This film is about Ray (Farrell) and Ken (Gleeson), two hitmen who are hiding out in the small Belgian town of Bruges.  While hiding out in this picturesque village, they are suppose to blend in with the tourists and draw no attention to themselves.  For Ken, this is a chance to learn the history of this village.  For Ray, this is torture.  When things looked at their worst for Ray, he meets the beautiful Chloe (Clemence Poesy) and the "Racist Dwarf" Jimmy (Jordan Prentice), who lift his spirits.  Because the hitmen are there hiding out , due to a job that went wrong, craziness is bound to ensue.

To me this film was a real breath of fresh air.  So many films today are safe. They take the story to the edge but never push it over the edge.  This movie to me is the perfect Dramedy.  The story never lacked, the acting was never overdone.  Collin Farrell was in his best form in this film.  His reactions were genuine, you truly felt his every emotion.  The shots were beautiful.  I want to visit this town now because of this movie.

I really wished that I was able to see this film in the theater.  I watched it at home with my family and at times I know that I was the only one to be laughing at some of the jokes.  I love films like this that the jokes come at you so fast that  if you are not paying attention to what is being said you will miss it entirely.  Now, I want to purchase this DVD so I can watch it and see what I missed.

Please believe me that any movie that teaches you that shooting blanks at someone can still hurt them,  and that it is ok to karate chop a racist dwarf is a winner in my book.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

McMurphy Out!
