An Inside look at 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer' Moviebook

by Joey Paur

If your anything like me, and you’re a movie geek you are also most likely interested in the process a film goes through to actually get made. Film production is incredibly hectic and there are so many people working on so many different things that it almost seems impossible to organize, but it is done for every movie that gets made.

I recently came across a making of book for the movie ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’. It takes you through the whole process and goes into details of the making of the film. The thing I liked about it most was the excitement and dedication Rob Cohen had while he was making the film! In my opinion the ideas he brought to the table is what is going to make this movie better than the first 2 mummy films. I like what I have seen from the preview, but this book goes into some great detail on the movie that you wont get even if you saw the whole movie. I am just going to touch on each section of the book to give you an idea of what to expect.

The book starts off by taking you through the very first meeting Rob had with Universal regarding the film. It then moves on to Rob’s thoughts and his growing excitement as he starts to bring everything together, including his team.

The whole movie was built around Rob Cohen’s personal interest and appreciation of the Chinese culture. Everything that was designed for the movie is incredibly detailed and looks great! I think the special effects are going to be pretty good. The one thing I am still not sold on is the dragon, but everything else looks pretty solid.

These is a lot of amazing art and design that was done for this movie. It also reveals that the opening scene of the movie of the movie “reveals a panoramic view of China’s Great Wall, one of the most extraordinary feats of construction in human history.” I have always wanted to see something like this done! The book says that this shot is “meant to show that the Wall was, in essence, a mass grave…” There is some really cool stuff that they go into detail about. Other things that The book goes into is The Pyramids of China and the Terra-cotta Army of Xian which plays a huge part in the movie.

I am pretty excited to see Ron Cohen's vision of The Mummy come to life!

The following are the book chapters:

About the filmmakers

I really enjoyed reading the book and being able to see the art work that was done for the movie. I am also a history buff and they offer some fun details on the history of China which is pretty cool. Anyone interested in the art of filmmaking or is a big fan of the Mummy movies needs to check this book out!
