An EMH Review (kind of): “Step Brothers” inspires the question…If a movie is funny, does that mean it is good?

by EMH

First of all, I’m back. Second, I am sorry it took me so long. Now let’s move on…

I was looking over the American Film Institute’s (AFI) list of 100 greatest comedy movies, also known as “100 years, 100 laughs.” I noticed “Singin’ in the Rain” was listed as the 16th best comedy movie in American cinema. 16. Remember that.

Then I went to the AFI’s list of the 100 greatest movies in American cinema. On this list, the Gene Kelly musical was listed as the 5th best film…ever…in American cinema.

“So what,” you ask? Well, apparently, according to the AFI, there are 15 better comedies in American film history than “Singin’ in the Rain,” but only 4 better movies.

Now, am I writing all this to find fault with the infamous AFI top 100 lists? No, there are other ways to do that. I am going over these numbers to support my belief that a movie can be horrible, but still be very funny.

So you have probably guessed what I thought of “Step Brothers,” the latest effort from the comedy team of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. It was terrible, and I laughed through the whole movie.

Why was this movie so funny? Two words: Mary Steenburgen.

Okay, so she didn’t get all the laughs, but she and her husband, played by Richard Jenkins, do a fine job in supporting these two monsters of comedy.

To me, movies like this don’t need reviews. You know it’s probably going to be incredibly stupid and bad at the same time from the moment you see the trailer. However, that’s not why you go to see a movie like this. All you want is for it to make you laugh, and “Step Brothers” delivers in that department.

5 things to remember after seeing “Step Brothers”

  1. Neither Will Ferrell nor John C. Reilly should make a movie without the other one being in it at some point. They are just so good together on screen.

  2. Remember the name Richard Jenkins. You have seen him in little roles here and there for over 30 years. He will be nominated for an Academy Award next year. No, of course not for this movie, but for “The Visitor,” which was released earlier this year.

  3. Boats ‘N Hoes.

  4. Your voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.

  5. “I tea-bagged your drumset.”
