If your a fan of Warhammer then your gonna love this news! Codex Pictures has announced that for the first ime Games Workshop's incredibly popular Warhammer 40,000 universe is going to be developed into a feature-length film for DVD.

The film will be called Ultramarines, its described as a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques to bring the movie to life. Since Lord of the Rings came out we have seen a rise in these type of fantasy type games and books being adapted into feature films. With the most recent news of World of Warcraft being adapted by Sam Raimi, and A Song of Fire and Ice being adapted by HBO, the next logical step was to get Warhammer into feature film development.

I'm surprised this didn't get any kind of film made sooner. But apparently studios have been asking about it for years, but Games Workshop has been turning them down until the right people came along to develop it. Erik Mogensen, Licensing and Acquired Rights Manager for Games Workshop, said,

Over the years, we have been approached again and again by all sorts of producers and film companies wanting to take our intellectual property to the screen. We have always believed that, in the right hands, the stories, themes and characters from the Warhammer 40,000 universe would lend themselves perfectly to the movie genre. We’re working closely with the talented team at Codex Pictures, who have an excellent understanding of the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property and an inspired vision for the movie. We can’t wait to see our universe come to life on-screen.

I don't know much about Codex Pictures but they are based in London and their main focus is high quality animated features. The only credits listed on their website are the Bionicle DVD trilogy that was produced for the Lego Company. I'm sure they probably could have got a much bigger studio to help them with the project, maybe even get a feature developed. But perhaps this is the beginning of a much bigger plan. Maybe this is the first step in building toward a feature film of the big screen.

Warhammer has a huge following and there are several different stories that the creative team will be able to draw from. I'm really interested to see how this all turns out. What are your thoughts on this new sci-fi film?
