And the Golden Globe host is...

Ricky Gervais! Applause. Standing ovation. "Thank you." More applause. "Please sit down." The crowd gets louder... and so on.

Or so myself or Gervais himself would like the announcement to go down. But it is quite a feet! The comedian has been tapped to host the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards, becoming the first to host the telecast since 1995.

Gervais co-created, directed and starred in the original BBC version of The Office, and had the same list of credits for HBO's Extras. He recently transitioned those hats to features, with The Invention of Lying, co-directed by Matthew Robinson, and the forth coming comedy he co-directed with Stephen Merchant, Cemetery Junction(due out in April).

Gervais is always a highlight when he presents awards. It was only a matter of time before he had reign of the whole show!

Paul Telegdy, exec vp alternative programming at NBC and Universal Media Studios, said of Gervais:

Ricky is certainly one of the funniest people on the planet and has provided some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent memory. His unique comedic style will enhance the only awards show that brings together television and film stars to celebrate entertainment's biggest night of the year.

Gervais explained why he's turned down other hosting offers, but jumped at the chance for this particular awards show:

Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down.

The 2010 Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC on January 17th,  from the Beverly Hilton.
