Amy Adams circling THE PROMISED LAND - Hillcoat's retitled 'Wettest County...' adaptation

When Venkman and I went to a screening of John Hillcoat's feature adaptation of The Road back in October, we ran into Amy Adams. The wheels turned in our head, but it wasn't the time nor the place to ask, interrogate her about her presence at this particular screening of this particular director.

But now it's safe to assume that it was business that got her into the screening, and that pleasure ensued as Adams is in negotiations for the Hillcoat's new film The Promised Land. Scripted by Nick Cave, and based on Matt Bondurant's novel the Wettest County in the World, Hillcoat has aims to begin shooting this tale of “West Virginia, moonshine, backwoods, and Prohibition" as early as February.

Based on Bondurant's grandfather and two granduncles lives during the 1920's prohibition era, The Wettest County in the World centers on The Bondurant Boys, a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Forrest, the eldest brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; Howard, the middle brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Driven and haunted, these men forge a business, fall in love, and struggle to stay afloat as they watch their family die, their father's business fail, and the world they know crumble beneath the Depression and drought.

The news comes from a promo poster out of AFM that advertises Adams, as well as Ryan Gosling and Shia Labeouf as the hook in order to try and get financing. But you can see in the fine print that "credits are not contractual," so all of the actors are not officially attached at this point.

I think this project has plenty of potential. I loved Hillcoat and Cave's first collaboration in The Proposition. Hopefully they can nail down financing and the cast soon!

What do you think of everyone attached THE PROMISED LAND so far?
