Guillermo del Toro is going to have one hell of a fun time directing The Hobbit. He's so excited about the project that of course he is going to throw himself into the mix by making himself a little creature in the film. It will be a fun little easter egg to see what he transformers himself into. He reveals this bit of news in a recent interview in which he says:
In The Hobbit I will play a small monster. I will transform myself in a small creature, not an important monster, just a type 'background'.
It may not be a big part, just a background monster, but it's still cool. He confirmed this news in the message boards at theonering.net saying:
I had a hand on the design of the creature and I will personally sculpt the appliances that will be applied on my face and hands. I used to sculpt the creatures for NECROPIA (my FX company) and I miss it a bit. I will have a line or two and die quickly.
How great is that!? The guy is going to design and create the creature he will play in the film, say a couple of lines and then die. Good for him! I imagine it is fun for a director to make a cameo in his own film. He previously commented that he didn't think he'd put himself into The Hobbit, as has religiously avoids making cameos in his movies(unlike Jackson who appears in all of three of the Rings films). But it's good to see del Toro make an exception, it's a special case.
Here is the full interview with del Toro which is in another language.
