GEARS OF WAR Movie to take place on Emergence Day?

It looks like the new Gears of War movie that will eventually be made is going to be an origin story that revolves around Emergence Day. For those of you who have played the game, you're familiar with what E-Day is, if not let me give you a little break down:

Emergence Day or E-Day was a planet wide assault on the surface of Sera by the Locust Horde. Every single human city was attacked from underground, using both bio-engineered weapons and stolen human technology. The Locust Horde was able to defeat all organised human resistance for over a year, and used the spoils of war to gather all able military and technological equipment to use against the COG and few UIR nations that still existed after the Pendulum Wars. The Locust onslaught continues for a year until the Hammer of Dawn counterattack, under the elected Chairman Richard Prescott.

I think this would be the perfect starting point for the film, but the creative folks developing the film haven't decided if the story should take place in the time period that the video game takes place or if it should start with a story about E-Day.

Producer Wyck Godfrey recently talked with Making Of and had this to say:

The hard part is how to make it into something that doesn’t feel like a world torn asunder and people just in battle. I think we really want to focus on the idea of a world that’s running well, and then it’s Emergence Day and kind of make it impactful and immediate and the survival of those 48 hours as people survive Emergence Day. It’s more like ‘Cloverfield’ or something like that. Because trying to tell the epic story of an alien planet that’s living in a horrific environment just feels like the wrong mood right now.

The fact of the matter is, if you are a fan of the game then you've seen the world and story of post E-Day. Then there are those people that haven't played the game and don't really know what going on. Dropping those people in the middle of a huge story wouldn't be fair. As a fan I would love to see the story of E-Day brought to life.

As we have reported before Len Wisemen the director of the Underwold films is taking on the duties of bringing Gears of War to life. This will definitely be his biggest film yet and I hope he can handle it. I enjoyed the Underworld movies for what they are, but I am looking for something a lot better and more epic for the Gears of War film. I hope he pulls it off.

So what timeline do you think the movie should take place in?

Here are the two opening cinematics from Gears of War 1 and 2 that go into detail about Emergence Day.
