J.J. Abrams to Produce The Untold Story of the World's Biggest Diamond Heist

by Joey Paur

Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams Bad Robot Productions is teaming up to bring us a movie about the worlds biggest and greatest diamond heist. Sounds like this could be a potential Oceans 14 movie, but this diamond heist is based on fasinatingly true story. The movie will be based on a short article written by Joshua Davis in Wired magazine. Leonardo Notarbartolo was the mastermind behind the heist where a group of Italian thieves broke into  the Antwerp Diamond Center and stole around $100 Million worth of loose diamonds, gold, jewlry, and other spoils. He was arrested in February 2003.

Notarbartolo was just released from prison this week in Belgium. Check out what these guys had to go through to pull off the heist. The vault is two floors beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and was thought to be impenetrable. The vault was protected by 10 layers of security including:

  • Infrared heat detectors

  • Doppler radar

  • A Magnetic field

  • A seismic sensor

  • A lock with 100 million possible combination's

  • Security cameras

  • Heat/motion sensor (Approximate location)

Investigators still have no idea how the heist was pulled off and the loot was never found. Notarbartolo was sentenced to 10 years based on circemstantial evidence. He has always denied he had anything to do with it until now. You have got to go to Wired and read the story of how all this went down! Its amazing! This is going to make a great movie, especially with J.J. Abrams behind it. Im looking forward to it.
