Detail's revealed for Pixar's next Short Film PARTLY CLOUDY

by Joey Paur

I came across Pixars next short film called 'Partly Cloudy' last month but I had no information on what is was about or what was involved other than the title. The movie will be played before the screening of 'UP' Now it looks like some details have been revealed over on Pixar's blog. 'Partly Cloudy'  is being directed by Peter Sohn who is a storyboard artist and animator for Pixar. This will be his directorial debut. I love that Pixar is allowing their artists to strengthen their creative muscles. If the movie is good this guy could eventually direct a Pixar feature. Sohn also provided the voice of Emile in 'Ratatouille'. So here is what you can expect from Pixar's next short film.

Partly Cloudy will elaborate on the age-old story of babies being delivered to their mothers by storks. In the short, clouds are essentially baby factories, where babies are made out of 'fluffy white stuff'. Each cloud has a stork assigned to deliver the babies produced.

Partly Cloudy's protagonist is a cloud named Gus who makes the 'tougher babies' like alligators and porcupines. Peck is Gus' stork who's grown tired of having to deliver all the tough babies and wants to move on to softer ones like kittens and humans. The short's climax is when Gus thinks Peck quit in search of easier deliveries.

In the sidebar, director Peter Sohn describes the film as being about communication. He talks about growing up with parents who only spoke Korean and how often his mother would tell him to do one thing (in broken English) when she meant something completely different. He notes that traditional Disney films like Bambi and Dumbo were one of the few things his family could bond over since they didn't rely on dialogue as much.

Sounds like an interesting concept. I always look forward to watching Pixar's short films and it sounds like it will be pretty good.
