Exclusive STAR TREK Review from Australia's Urban Nerd

by Joey Paur

As you know yesterday Star Trek had its world premier in Austin and Australia. One of our readers from Australia known as Urban Nerd was one of the lucky few who had the opportunity to see the film and was kind enough to write up a review for all of our readers, for which we here at GeekTyrant are very grateful. Here is what he thought of the movie!

This is my first review and I will try not to spoil the plot as much as possible. The movie opens with Capt. Robau (Faran Tahir) in a battle against an unknown ship that nearly totally destroys the Enterprise; it is then that we first meet Nero's (Eric Bana). Capt. Robau is asked to shuttle over to meet with Nero and gives command to George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth)

Without going into too much detail, Kirk issues the command to abandoned ship which includes his wife Winona (Jennifer Morrison) who is about to give birth to their son. It is George who names their son seconds before his death.

We then see young James Kirk (Jimmy Bennett) in the familiar trailer driving along Iowa back road. This is where we see the one and only product placement (I did not see any others) for Nokia as a friend of Kirk's calls him on the cars cell phone. This was put in to show how careless and rebellious James is at this point.

We also see a young Spock (Jacob Kogan) who has to defend himself from criticism due to the fact that he is half human - we also see him get into a fight which also outlines his inability to control his human emotions.

The movie then jumps to Kirk now in his late 20's drunk in a pub trying to chat up Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and getting him into a fight with some Star Fleet officers. The fight is broken up by Capt. Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) who is surprised to find James in the midst of it and urges him to follow his father's footsteps and become a Starfleet Captain. He explains that his dad was a captain for 12 minutes and saved 800 lives including his own and wants him to prove he can do better.

We also see Spock who is given the honour of being able to join the Vulcan Science Ministry which he refuses instead opting to join Star Fleet.

Kirk jumps aboard a recruitment ship where he meets Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) who makes a reference to having nothing to lose after a bad divorce which left him with only his ‘Bones'.

We slowly see the crew all come into place; Kirk's interaction with Bones also shows why they are such close friends. The back stories are nicely put together with plenty of humour. Chekov's (Anton Yelchin) introduction is hilarious and a nice play on his strong accent.

Conclusion: Allot of the classic Bones and Scotty (Simon Pegg) lines are there. Special effects and sound are amazing, a good improvement over the original without at the same time deviating to far from it. It was good to hear Majel Barrett's voice as the computer.

The plot is well balanced without being predictable. Plenty of action and just enough comedy, more in tie with the original series, something that has been missing for a while in the Trek movies.

Eric Bana does a fantastic job as the bad guy without the need for the cliché Kirk vs the bad guy hand to hand fight - which was a welcomed sight.

I give it 10/10 and no - I am not a Trekie.

Urban Nerd also was kind enough to provide some pictures of the Even in Australia for you all.
