Stretch Armstrong gets a Grazer

by Billy Fisher

A couple of months ago Dr. Venkman gave us the horrid news that there was going to be a movie about the 70's toy Stretch Armstrong.  To be honest with you, I was hoping that this project would never get legs.  I am sorry, it just seems that things in Hollywood are getting a little out of control.  OK, let's start with the news that I have, then I will let you know how I truly feel about this situation.

The project that I hoped would die, got an injection that might give it life.  Brian Grazer( A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster), who in my opinion is one of Hollywood's best, signed on to produce the upcoming Stretch Armstrong film.  In case you were interested it also got a release date, April 2011. With Steve Oedekerk already at the helm of this project, and Grazer backing it, this film might actually hit theaters.  Courtesy of slashfilms, this is the statement that BG issued:

“Stretch Armstrong is a character I have wanted to see on screen for a long time. He’s an unconventional kind of super hero with a power that no one would want. It’s a story about a guy stretching- if you will - the limits of what is possible to become all that he can be.”

This is what I don't get.  There are a ton of books and comic books that I would love to see on the big screen.  Things like The Dark Tower series and the Enders Game series, I think deserve all of Hollywood's attention because they could be legendary.  In fact I think that BG would be great for both of those projects.  But NO!  Dude thinks that his time would be best spent making Stretch mo' fricken Armstrong.  While the two of the worlds greatest characters, Roland of Gilead and Ender Wiggen, will remain on the page and not on the screen.

Honestly, I hope that they can make a comedy that is worth seeing.  I haven't read the script or seen any screen shots, so I may be passing judgement a little too early.  I am just getting tired of weak sauce projects like this, getting the time, money and talent.  When other projects deserve all of those things so much more.  I don't know maybe my opinion is too jaded.  I really want to know what you have to say about this.  Until next time, let me know what you think.
