SNL's MacGRUBER movie: Plot Details and Casting

by Eli Reyes

We reported yesterday that the recurring SNL sketch MacGruber, is being adapted into a movie that would begin filming next month. Will Forte and Kristen Wiig will reprise their roles from the sketches, which parody the 1985 TV series Macgyver.

Well it looks as if the film will be getting some star power! Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer are both in negotiations to star in the film. And we can only hope, if not assume that Macgyver star Richard Dean Anderson will make an appearance, as he's made several in the sketches as MacGruber's father.

Macgruber creator Jorma Taccone will helm the the project, with SNL producer/creator Lorne Michaels producing. Taccone wrote the sketches with Forte and John Solomon. The three penned the script for the MacGruber Movie, and THR brought us the details of the story:

The legendary, much decorated MacGruber is pulled out of retirement as a monk in Ecuador by a colonel, who needs him once more to fight on behalf of his country. This time the mission involves going up against the evil Cunth, who has a nuclear warhead; the mission is personal because Cunth killed MacGruber's bride.

Phillippe would play an Army Officer named Piper, who is forced to work alongside the reluctant MacGruber. Though I understand a film needs bigger names, I hope an actor is brought on who can play it straight, but still bring a comedic side to it. I think SNL cast member Jason Sudeikis would do a better job in that role, as he's been doing exactly that kind on the show for years.

The movie would have Kilmer as the villian Cunth. Which I think is a brilliant choice! Kilmer can do it all; drama, comedy, action! Plus he has that creepy vibe going 24/7 anyway, he almost just needs to show up. But if things don't work out, I think they could easliy bring in Will Arnett to fill his shoes. And it would be a nice twist of fate, as Kilmer replaced Arnett as the voice of KITT on the new Knight Rider tv show.

The MacGruber movie may come out before the MacGyver movie New line is developing makes it to the screen. Double Feature anyone?

What do you guys think of the MacGruber movie plot? Do you want to see Phillippe and Kilmer come on board?
