Live-Action AKIRA Screenwriters Revealed

Akira

There was a time when Akira was considered dead as a doornail, but during Comic-Con this year news broke that the live-action Akira film was not dead. We reported back in July that Jonah Hex producer Andrew Lazar said they script was being worked on.

We are working on the script. It is a real priority project for Warner Bros. and so [the writers] are working on a draft.

We now have the names of the two screenwriters working on the film. Collider has confirmed thatscreenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are the guys taking on this epic project. These are the same two guys that wrote the film, Children of Men, which I really liked, and they are also credited on writing Iron Man.

The story is set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan in the near future. And the famous motorcycle is definitely a part of the film, but that bit of info shouldn’t surprise anyone. If the script is approved the movie could go into production in 2010 with a release date in 2011. The movie will be given a big budget to make the best possible Akira movie we could get.

Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio's production company is behind the adaptation. No stars have been attached to the film yet, but it has been suggested that because Leonardo DiCaprio is producing, he may end up staring in the film as Kaneda. It was also rumored that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would take on the role of Tetsuo. These are only rumors at the moment.

I'm excited to see who comes in to direct the film and who they get to star in it. This is a very big project, that has such a huge following. There are many people who are not cool with the fact that this is happening, and I totally understand why! There is a huge chance the movie will not live up to the anime film. In fact it probably wont, but at least we will get to see what this story could look like live-action style. What do you think?
