Robert Downey Jr. Drops out of Favreau's COWBOYS & ALIENS

Oh no! I've got some pretty bummer news for everyone. As you can see by the title Robert Downey Jr. has dropped out of director Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens. I was really looking forward to this great little creative team getting together to make a movie outside of Iron Man, but that's not going to happen with this film.

The movie is still moving forward, Jon Favreau is currently still attached to direct it, but the show will go on without Downey Jr. So as of right now DreamWorks is currently out and about looking for a new male lead to play the role of Zeke Jackson for the film. Production is set to begin this year and released in theaters in 2011 so I'm sure a new actor will be announced in the near future.

There was no explanation as to why he left, but there is speculation that Warner Bros. is putting the Sherlock Holmes sequel on the fast track. Whatever the reason is, it's too bad, I was excited to see him in this role.

The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name which focuses on outer-space creatures who land in Arizona circa the mid-19th century intent on enslaving the local population, until a group of cowboys and Apache Indians fight back. The main character Zeke Jackson leads the anti-alien revolt in the story.

It makes me wonder if they are going to try to get another big name actor or if they are going to go with a lesser know person.

Now that Downey Jr. is out of the production who do you think should replace him in the lead role?
