Daniel Craig in talks star in Jon Favreau’s COWBOYS & ALIENS

A couple of days ago we reported that Robert Downey Jr. would be dropping out of Jon Favreau's big-screen adaptation of the Scott Mitchell Rosenberg comic book series Cowboys & Aliens. Speculation is that Downey had to cancel the Iron Man reunion due to contractual commitments to the fast tracked Sherlock Holmes sequel that would have conflicted with production set to begin this year.

When the news broke the name instantly thrown around the net and in our Rant Back section was that of Nathan Fillion -- "Going from space cowboy fighting humans in space [on Firefly & Serenity] (duh) to normal cowboy fighting aliens on earth?" A name that wasn't tossed around, and certainly not one associated with cowboys (despite his gun skills), is Daniel Craig. But according to Collider's sources the past and future James Bond is currently in negotiations -- and they heavily stress that it's just negotiations -- to take over the lead role of Zeke Jackson.

Craig has an open schedule right now, that is unless the schedule for Bond 23 moves up or he decides to do a different project. Craig can do a pretty flawless American accent, he looks the part and he takes a head on approach to the action stuff he's done. So I definitely wouldn't mind seeing him in the role.

The Star Trek reboot story team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (M:I III), and Damon Lindelof (Lost) are penning the adaptation of Cowboys & Aliens with an aim for a 2011 release. For those unfamiliar with the comic, here’s the logline:

In Silver City, Arizona, Apache Indians and Western settlers must lay their differences aside when an alien spaceship crash lands in their city. You can click here and read the full comic.

Be sure to voice what you think of Daniel Craig possibly starring in Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens movie, and if there is someone you'd rather see in the lead role.
