PIRANHA 3-D release date gets Pushed Back

The release of Piranha 3-D just got eaten up. The Weinstein Co. has just relocated Dimension's remake of Piranha, from director Alexandre Aja(Mirrors/The Hills Have Eyes), from its April 16th release date back four and a half months to August 27th. Not a good sign for TWC, who's most recent films; Youth in Revolt, The Road and Nine, have performed poorly at the box office. The latter of which  has been an outright financial and critical disaster for the studio, despite its Golden Globe nominations.

David Glaser, a senior Weinstein Co. executive, told the LA Times that there were no financial motivations behind the decision to move Piranha 3-D. The move was simply made to avoid competition with Lionsgate's Kick-Ass, the highly-anticipated comic-book adaptation which is set to come out that same weekend, and would undoubtedly appeal to the same young demographics.

The company also recently delayed the premiere of the sequel to their surprise hit Hoodwinked. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, was scheduled to open this weekend but still isn't slated for a new release date.

Piranha 3-D was one of Dimensions more highly-anticipated releases. The genre film pulled together quite a surprising cast with Elizabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell and Adam Scott(Step Brothers) starring, with Ving Rames(Mission: Impossible films), Eli Roth(Hostel director and Inglourious Basterds star) and the one and only Richard Dreyfuss making cameo appearances.

So sit tight horror fans, you may need to make a reservation in advance for a bigger boat. Dangit, it just doesn't have the same ring to it.
