7 Films are now in Contention for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced that seven films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 82nd Academy Awards. This was whittled down from 15 films that were in the running.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

  • Avatar
  • District 9
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Star Trek
  • Terminator Salvation
  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
  • 2012

There's no doubt in my mind that AVATAR is going to take home the oscar. The films that are NO LONGER in contention include:

  • Angels & Demons
  • Coraline
  • Disney's A Christmas Carol
  • G-Force
  • G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Watchmen
  • Where the Wild Things Are

On Thursday, January 21, all members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

What three films do you think will end up being nominated?
