Yesterday good news hit the internet that The Hobbit was officially greenlit, and that Peter Jackson was set to direct the two films. Now we have some updated casting news that I'm sure many of you would like to hear.

It was previously reported that Martin Freeman was offered the role of Bilbo Baggins in the film. The actor wasn't sure if he would be able to take it due to scheduling conflicts, but it looks like they were able to work things out because he is almost officially signed on to the role.

Three other actors have also been offered roles in the film, they include David Tennant (Previously rumored and star of Doctor Who), Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Bastereds) and Jimmy Nesbitt (Bloody Sunday, Millions).

According to Deadline:

Things must be getting close on The Hobbit, because casting buzz is getting strong in Hollywood. Word is Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant. Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum.

The production for the film is set to begin in February so they have a little over three months to get everything together. Now that the production is trucking forward expect to hear a lot more news and announcements in the coming months, so stay tuned!
