THE GOONIES Headed to Broadway and More Talk on the Sequel that Won't Happen!

Movie The Goonies by Joey Paur

These days whenever we hear or talk about The Goonies, the possibility of a sequel always comes up. It would be awesome if it happened, but I don't think it ever will. You know what will happen though? A Goonies Broadway musical!

I never thought I'd see this happen either! Hell, it never even crossd my mind that anyone would ever think of turning the classic 80's film into a Broadway muiscal.

At a recent press junkett for The Goonies' 25th Anniversary DVD and Blu-ray release, the cast came back together and once again talked about the sequel to the film saying,

There have been talks for so many years and I know that a lot of us are for it. But honestly, I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. If it was going to happen it would’ve happened many years ago.

Corey Feldman (Mouth) went on to talka bout how much he pushed for the sequel:

I talked to him (Richard Donner) about a script but it didn’t end up flourishing. The sequel script, there have been times up until five years ago where they actually had a script with well-renowned writers working on a great, magnificent script and it just didn’t happen. There’s a lot of politics involved but the bottom line, like what Jeff (Cohen) said jokingly, but this is in all essences a treasure trove for Warner Bros. It’s their classic family film of all time. So I think we would all be supportive in seeing it happen if there was the right script, if (Richard) Donner was at the helm and (Steven) Spielberg got behind it. Yeah, I’d be there. But at this point I don’t think its going to happen because we’re all getting too old. If it didn’t happen like today then you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.

The director of the film Richard Donnor then comes in to talk about his efforts to get the sequel off the ground, and also this upcoming Broadway muiscal.

We were thinking that (the sequel) for years back, couldn’t do it. Felt like everything we were doing would hurt what we had with the original, hence the musical. But Steven (Spielberg) said something the other day to me that he and Chris (Columbus) were talking about and maybe something — but I don’t think there’d be a sequel. I wouldn’t remake it. If anything it’d be something new and fresh. Hopefully we’re doing this as a musical on Broadway. It took forever to get on Broadway. It was a long, long process but it just got a lot shorter because there’s a great writer/producer (Tim Long) who does musicals on The Simpsons which are classic. He just delivered a treatment on ‘Goonies’ as a musical and it’s friggin’ great.

So don't expect that sequel to happen anytime soon, if ever. But what do  you think about this Goonies Broadway musical thing?
